Apple’s iPhone 7 Plus Finally Joins Android MEGA-MEMORY-PARTY

Apple’s always been a bit conservative when it comes to memory. iPhones for the longest time shipped with 1GB of RAM, while its Android counterparts were adding in silly amounts of RAM in order to maximise performance.

Apple has always managed with less RAM because of the nature of its phones and software; everything is optimised to the hilt and this means less is required to get impressive performance.

The last three generations of iPhones have shipped with specs that you’d normally see inside a mid-range Android phone, yet they have lead the market with respect to overall performance inside benchmarks. In this respect, Apple’s engineering prowess cannot be faulted.

However, as things progress more memory is inevitable and this year’s iPhone 7 Plus model features the most RAM ever plopped inside an iPhone – it features 3GB of RAM.

So why now? Simple: Apple wants this phone to be used by camera and video types which means performing tasks like image and video editing on the fly. This is very intensive and, therefore, requires big jumps in CPU/GPU technology as well as memory.

Apple only seems to implement changes like this when they are absolutely necessary. Just look at its approach to display technology. But how much more grunt will this additional 1GB of RAM bring to the party? Given what Apple’s done with 2GB and 1GB in the past, I’d say quite a bit.

Couple this with the new A10 CPU and you’re likely looking at the best-performing phone in the mobile space, though we’ll have to wait for actual, real-world testing to establish that for a fact.
