Assassin’s Creed Franchise Returning To Annual Release Schedule? – Game Rant

Two years ago, Ubisoft revealed that it was planning to place the Assassin’s Creed franchise on the shelf to let the series refocus after a grueling annual release schedule that formed following the release of Assassin’s Creed 2 back in 2009. The move paid dividends for Ubisoft as Assassin’s Creed Origins reimagined the franchise by adding in stronger RPG elements and letting players explore a timeline before the traditional Assassins versus Templars conflict. With an all-new game set to release in a few months, many fans began to wonder if Ubisoft planned to return the important franchise to its annual launch cycle.

In an interview with Geoff Keighley at E3 2018, Ubisoft co-founder and CEO, Yves Guillemot, was asked this very question regarding the Assassin’s Creed franchise considering that Origins just launched late in 2017 and now the newly announced Assassin’s Creed Odyssey is planned for launch in October. As it turns out, the company has no plans to return to the old annual release cycle at this time. In fact, there isn’t a plan as to when a new game is released, so as Guillemot put it, fans are likely to see it some years and then not at all in others.

What’s interesting then is the current plans to launch Assassin’s Creed Odyssey so soon after the return and success of Assassin’s Creed Origins. According to Guillemot, it’s just a happy coincidence. Ubisoft Quebec, the studio who last worked on Assassin’s Creed Syndicate, has actually been working on Odyssey for the past three years in secret. Coming into E3 2018, the studio was in a position where the game was nearing completion and was more than ready to be shown off to the public.

Though leaked prior to the big show this year, Ubisoft revealed plenty of details regarding the Ancient Greek inspired adventure. Assassin’s Creed Odyssey takes players even further back in time, 400 years before its predecessor, to the time of the Peloponnesian War and the famous Battle of Thermopylae. The game also introduces a number of new RPG mechanics to the series including being able to select a character, either Alexios or Kassandra, as well as dialogue and romance options.

Assassin’s Creed Odyssey releases October 5 for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
