Many months ago, Finnish developer Frozenbyte announced Nine Parchments. Nine Parchments is a co-op blast ’em up game filled with magic and mayhem.
Just like Trine, the game takes the studio back to its fantasy roots. The story of Nine Parchments revolves around a group of drop-out wizard apprentices, who’ve decided to skip their training for a quick path to power. As the wannabe wizards rapidly discover game-changing new spells and ignore all safety aspects, it’s only natural that their hasty progress results in lots of unwanted deaths. From what it seems, the game combines the studio’s signature humor with solid gameplay mechanics.
However, that’s not the reason why Nine Parchments is making the news lately. Frozenbyte has managed to get the game running at 4K 60 FPS on Xbox One X but the PlayStation 4 Pro version still runs at 1080p 60 FPS. This is surprising to say the least because we haven’t seen this large of a difference between versions before.
In an interview between the studio and WCCFtech, the resolution and frame rates on various consoles were revealed. Frozenbyte provided the following statement.
We won’t have HDR support, but Xbox One X and PC will be capable of 4K… Here’s the different specs on various platforms: 1080p 60 FPS on PS4 and PS4 Pro, 1080p 30 FPS on Switch docked, 720p 30 FPS undocked, 1080p 60 FPS on Xbox One with dynamic resolution scaling, and 4K 60 FPS on Xbox One X.
It’s unclear if “4K 60 FPS” refers native 4K or checkerboarded 4K, but given the fact that so many titles run at native 4K on Xbox One X, it seems like that’s probably the rendering technique used here. No matter if it’s checkerboarded 4K, this still represents a significant boost in image quality over the PlayStation 4 Pro.
Nine Parchments should be available on Xbox One soon, as it launches for PC and Nintendo Switch today.
