For Honor Dedicated Servers Planned With Season 3-4 Changes

Ubisoft released a roadmap today detailing its plans for Season 3 and 4 of For Honor. But stealing the thunder from the upcoming content plans is the reveal that For Honor is going to be shifting to dedicated server technology. While still working on patches and server stability for For Honor, Ubisoft’s also been working on dedicated servers for some time. That said, it’s a big change, and while Ubisoft plans to roll it out in Season 3 or 4, there’s still a lot of work to do.

For Honor Game Director Damien Kieken described the thought process within the team that led to the decision to switch to dedicated servers:

“We saw that we had connectivity and stability problems, mostly on 4v4 modes, so it’s one of the things we’ve looked at and worked on a lot since the game launched. And during that process, we decided to do an analysis of the whole online infrastructure we have and compare it to other existing ones. And in the end, based on all the data we gathered … we decided to do the move and to migrate to a dedicated server technology, for many, many different reasons.”

Kieken goes on to explain how dedicated servers will create a much more stable environment, especially for 4v4 matches, in the long-term. Players will no longer have to deal with host migration and pauses in the middle of a match, nor will they have to meddle with NAT settings to play with different friends. But at its heart, its more about providing an environment where lag isn’t fluctuating match to match based on where the host is from.

For Honor Dedicated Servers, Roadmap for Seasons 3 and 4

That doesn’t mean that dedicated servers for For Honor is right around the corner, however. It’s still in the development stage, though Ubisoft seems optimistic. Considering it may yet be awhile, Ubisoft is still working on upgrading current connections:

“Not all the team has switched to work on dedicated servers, so we have a dedicated team for that that is working inside our online team. And the other part of the online team is still working on improving the current network infrastructure.”

With Seasons 3 and 4 to take place between August 2017 and February 2018, about three months each, dedicated servers could fall into later 2018. As exciting as the decision is, best not to get too excited until its launch is officially confirmed.

Dedicated servers aren’t the only thing Ubisoft has planned for the foreseeable future, however. Seasons 3 and 4 will continue For Honor‘s trend of constant content updates, adding four new characters and four new maps, new weapons, emotes, and customizations, as well as cool new features like a duel tournament and 4v4 PvP game mode. In addition to the new content, Ubisoft also wants to speed up the rate with which they address stability and balance via patches. For Honor players should basically expect more of the same, only faster than ever.

For Honor is available now on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
