Fortnite has been enjoying enormous success lately, thanks in large part to its free Battle Royale update. Players looking for a PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds style experience on consoles have flocked to Fortnite to get their fix. With Halloween right around the corner, Epic Games is bringing some new content into the game to celebrate the season along with some major gameplay changes for both the PvE and PvP sides of the title.
Update 1.8, also known as Fortnitemares, adds in a number of quality of life improvements to Fortnite’s popular Battle Royale mode such as voice chat on Xbox One and PlayStation 4 as well as auto-picking up loot rather than forcing the player to manually select everything. More importantly, Leaderboards are now live, letting players compare their stats against the world, friends, and by match type. Epic Games has also enabled seasons, giving players a chance to level up their character with a certain time to earn unique rewards and banner flair. The first season offers rewards at tier 10 and 25 with a level cap set at 100.
In addition to those big features, Fortnitemares adds a number of little Halloween touches to the game as well. In Battle Royale, players stuck inside the storm during a Battle Royale match will also see new effects and visuals to make things a little more spooky. A few weapons have also gotten a new look for the holiday as well including the Jack-O-Launcher and the Grave Digger assault rifle.
On the PvE front, eight of the Fortnite heroes now have Halloween inspired looks including a Ghoul Trooper, Llama Ninja, and more. A new region called Hexsylvania has also been added, offering players exclusive Halloween inspired rewards along with a new game mode called Vlad Moon Rising. In addition to 36 new story quests to tackle, the new Trap The Storm mode forces players to work together to reinforce and hold existing structures against pumpkin headed husks and Vampire Takers. Players can then spend newly earned in-game currency on Halloween llamas.
Propelled by the success of Battle Royale as well as the continued support of the game through these title updates, Epic Games has seen its player base consistently rise each month. While PlayerUnknown’s Battleground continues to experience unparalleled success on the PC, Fortnite continues to break its own concurrent players record as well. Just a couple of weeks ago, Epic announced that Battle Royale had passed 10 million players. With new features like seasons and leaderboards finally added to the game, the number is likely to continue to rise.
Fortnite is available now on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
