A common trend for Kickstarter games is DLC that is exclusive to those that have backed the game, and Friday the 13th: The Game is no different. In that game, only the earliest Kickstarter backers and those that opted to purchase it directly through Backerkit have access to the Tom Savini-created flaming Jason skin, which has caused some controversy among fans of the game. Unfortunately, anyone hoping that the flaming Jason skin will eventually be sold separately may want to get their expectations in check, as Gun Media claims it will never be outright sold as DLC.
Friday the 13th: The Game publisher Gun Media made this claim in a forum post on Steam, where it declared its loyalty to those that believed in the game and backed it on Kickstarter. Apparently the company has come under blast on social media for not making the skin available to everyone, and so it felt the need to acknowledge the controversy online.
“This team stands firm that for those of you who missed out; sorry. You missed out. Our backers believed. They funded. They supported. This is our thanks to them with a skin that is in no way superior to the other versions of Jason present within the game. I am sorry for those that want it now, but you missed out. We did everything we could to ensure that the word got out through our channels, press and otherwise, but the answer remains the same; we will not sell them.”
The flaming Jason skin doesn’t give players any advantage in-game, but it is a unique skin that is special since it’s designed by horror film legend Tom Savini. Savini is known for his special effects work on the very first Friday the 13th film as well as a number of other popular horror movies, so horror fans understandably want a chance to use his skin in the game. People want the Savini flaming Jason skin so much so, in fact, that it is being sold for upwards of $500 on eBay.
While scalpers take advantage of people desperate for the skin, it seems odd that Gun Media insists that the flaming Jason skin will never be sold separately as DLC. In the past, many pre-order and Kickstarter-exclusive rewards have ended up being sold separately at some point, and if Gun Media refuses to sell the skin as DLC, it seems like it is simply throwing money away. Despite the company’s insistence, though, it seems more likely than not that the DLC will eventually be available to purchase separately, perhaps at the game’s one year anniversary or during some other special event.
For now, Gun Media has bigger problems to worry about than the flaming Jason skin. As acknowledged in the same forum post, Friday the 13th: The Game has launched with a number of server issues and technical problems, many of which still need to be addressed. Maybe once these problems have been ironed out down the road, the company may reconsider its stance on selling the flaming Jason skin as standalone DLC.
Friday the 13th: The Game is available now for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
