Honor 10 vs Huawei P20: similar except the price tag

The Honor 10 faces fierce competition, but it has a lot of advantages on its side, not just including its price. It’s biggest competitor comes from within the family, in the form of the Huawei P20. In this comparison, we put the twins against each other head-to-head.

Smartphone design in 2018 looks like this: glass front, glass back, both curved and held together by a metal frame. The Huawei P20 and Honor 10 are no exception, but they do have some slight differences between them. Honor curves the glass right to the edges, achieving a rounder, smoother design, while Huawei makes the P20 a little more edgy. The camera protrudes slightly on both smartphones, but a bit more on the P20.

The Huawei P20 and Honor 10 each have a fingerprint sensor under the front of the display; on the Honor smartphone it is an ultrasound sensor that cannot be felt because it is integrated directly into the glass. Sounds great on paper, but it’s not so good, because the fingerprint recognition is both slower and more error-prone than with the “normal” sensor in the P20.

Brave new colors

Anyone who brings up the latest smartphones from Huawei and Honor has to mention the colors. The P20 Pro has caused a sensation with its two-tone shimmering Twilight color scheme, and Honor continues this with Phantom Blue and Phantom Green.

The smartphones are very conspicuous and stand out from the crowd of plain black, white, blue or pastel colored smartphones. It’s too bad that Huawei didn’t give the regular P20 the Twilight colors. Instead, it only offers the smartphone in black, blue and pink. Though it’s a matter of personal taste, you have to acknowledge Honor’s boldness here.

The hardware of both smartphones is largely identical. A Kirin 970 processor, 4 GB of RAM, an almost identical notched display and a 3,400 mAh strong battery. The Huawei P20 Pro offers only one memory option, 128 GB, while the Honor 10 has your choice of 64 or 128 GB. Neither allows you to expand the memory via microSD card, which is a shame. After all, the Honor 10 and the Huawei P20 are both dual-SIM capable.

The software of the Honor 10 and Huawei P20 is on the same level, with Android 8.1 Oreo and EMUI 8.1. Both are expected to get an update to Android P, though the timing is unclear.

The dual camera in the Huawei P20 comes from Leica, which is something the Honor 10 doesn’t have. This isn’t just because the Honor smartphones doesn’t bear the Leica stamp. They are, in fact, different cameras. Honor’s rear camera has slightly higher resolution sensors, while Huawei’s have slightly larger aperture.

The differences may not be huge, but they’re there. Above all, the software has changed. The Honor 10 uses a slightly modified camera app that offers more creative modes, such as AR effects, artistic filters and a 3D scanner that magically turns your face into an animated Emoji.

In a direct comparison, the camera of the P20 shows a bit more detail and more natural colors. The Honor 10 takes the color intensity a bit too far, especially when the AI mode is activated. If you turn it off, and this is also possible for each individual image, the results are very similar.

You can see the color intensity for yourself in a gallery of images we’ve taken with the Honor 10 here. Both cameras have no optical image stabilizer, but instead rely on the software.

There are some other details that differentiate the two devices. The Honor 10 still has the beloved headphone jack, as well as an IR blaster, which Huawei only gave to the Pro model. The Huawei P20 has IP68 certification against water and dust, while the Honor 10 skipped this. Neither has wireless charging, but fast charging is possible with the provided charger.

Little differences apart from the price tag

The bottom line is that the Honor 10 is the better overall package, considering the most important aspects first and leaving the little things aside. It has a headphone jack and IR blaster, and the camera has more options and a slightly better app. The camera also protrudes from the body less.

Meanwhile, the Huawei P20 has the better fingerprint scanner, since Honor’s ultrasound technology does the opposite of add value. Honor offers more color choices, though they may not be for everyone.

Taste may be subjective, but price is not. There’s a price difference of hundreds of dollars between the two smartphones, so it’s hard to justify choosing the more expensive Huawei P20 given how small the differences are between the two devices.
