Huawei has just announced its latest handset in the firm’s flagship Android “Mate” series, the Huawei Mate 9 phablet. Obviously the Mate 9 follows on from the Mate 8 from 2015, which came out of left field as a surprisingly brilliant bit of kit with some of the best battery life on the market.

Huawei introduced the Mate 9 at an event in Munich, Germany, and let’s get things straight from the get-go – this is a big ass phablet! It packs a 5.9in IPS display with a 1080p resolution and 2.5D glass. Despite the large size, the Mate 9 is a mere 7.5mm thick and for a phablet is quite lightweight at 169g.

Inside, as expected, there’s Huawei’s own Kirin series chipset; an update on last year’s model for the Huawei Mate 8, the Mate 9 carries the latest Kirin 960 SoC with eight cores; four 2.4GHz ARM Cortex-A73’s and four 1.8GHz ARM Cortex-A53’s, backed up by 4GB RAM and an ARM Mali-G71 MP8 GPU based on the new super-fast Bifrost architecture.

You may recall the Huawei P9 debuted the firm’s partnership with camera producer Leica with an advanced dual-sensor setup. With the Huawei Mate 9 we’re looking at the next-gen of that dualled-up hardware with a 20MP f/2.0 monochrome sensor and a 12MP f/2.2 colour sensor buddied up together on the phone’s rear. This setup also features optical image stabilisation (OIS), dual-tone dual-LED flash, and a new 4-in-1 hybrid autofocus with laser, phase-detect, depth, and contrast capabilities. It also has 4K video capture, and a hybrid zoom feature which Huawei claims is good at maintaining image quality when zoomed-in. Your front-facer is an 8MP f/1.9 affair with autofocus.

The Mate 9 stays true to its predecessor with a HUGE 4,000mAh battery cell with Super Charge support. Meanwhile, onboard storage is 64GB, there’s a fingerprint scanner on the back panel, and the phone supports dual-SIM input. Naturally the software is Android 7.0 Nougat with Huawei’s Emotion UI on top (version 5.0). Huawei is shipping the Mate 9 in a selection of colours, including Space Gray, Moonlight Silver, Champagne Gold, Mocha Brown, Ceramic White, and Black. A release date hasn’t yet been revealed but the European RRP is €699.
