Nintendo Switch Game Details Revealed by Reggie Fils-Aime

The last few weeks for Nintendo and its beloved Pokemon franchise have been a rollercoaster ride. The June Pokemon Direct Stream came and went without mentioning the one thing fans have wanted for the better part of two decades now, with the rumors that suggested Nintendo would announce a main Pokemon title for a console proving to be unsubstantiated – until, of course, E3 2017 rolled around. There, Nintendo shocked the world by squeezing the major announcement that Game Freak is developing a main Pokemon game for the Nintendo Switch into a 25 minute presentation that also featured the unveiling of Metroid Prime 4 and a slew of other titles.

To say that prospective Pokemon players were excited would be an understatement so large it borders on being an outright lie. The hype for a core Pokemon game on the Switch is already at a fever pitch, and in an effort to sustain this momentum through a summer where there likely won’t be any more new details on the game’s development, Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime revealed just enough information about the title to keep fans interested:

“[The new Pokemon Switch title will be] a traditional find, battle, train type experience.”

That quote emerges from a Bloomberg tech reporter stationed in Tokyo, Japan, who recently interviewed Reggie on both Pokemon and Metroid Prime 4. What Reggie has confirmed about the title might not seem like much at first, but it is a pretty big deal given the fact that it was somewhat unclear what Nintendo originally meant by a “core” Pokemon title. While many assumed this meant the experience Reggie describes in his quote, there was always the chance that Nintendo, having cultivated its image as a quirky industry giant on the back of some truly bizarre behavior, could have been referring to something closer to Pokemon Stadium.

Now, however, fans can truly look forward to having a Pokemon SunPokemon Moon type experience on the Switch in the near future. The release of Pokemon Ultra SunPokemon Ultra Moon will serve as a nice stop-gap measure in the meantime, but now, any Pokemon announcement Nintendo wants to make will have to be done with the knowledge that a core console Pokemon game with the gameplay we’ve come to love looms large over it – a situation that, from Nintendo’s perspective, might warrant a release date as soon as possible.
