PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds Getting New Map, Ping-Based Matchmaking Soon

With PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds now out of early access on PC (the Xbox One version is still in early access), fans of the hit battle royale game have been eager to find out what’s next. Developer PUBG Corp. had already promised to introduce new anti-cheat software, but there are apparently more new additions in store.

PUBG Corp. has now shed a little more light on what PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds fans can expect in the coming weeks and months. One of the main features that the team plans to introduce is a ping-based matchmaking system.

“Users with lower pings will be prioritized during matchmaking,” explains the developer, also calling it an “experimental method.” It will “improve the overall play experience by splitting the matching pool rather than restricting connection depending on ping.” PUBG Corp. also says that preparations are underway to test this method and the first trials will begin this week, though it is not yet ready to share specific dates.

The developer also confirms that it is working on a new PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds map that will be revealed in March. The game’s desert map, Miramar, was hotly anticipated but the release of the map was not without controversy. Some fans were disappointed by the map’s lack of cover as well as its building placement and loot drops, even going so far as to delete the map file (PUBG later made this a bannable offense). Hopefully, whatever this new map will receive a warmer welcome from diehard players.

It’s important to note that the update PUBG Corp. posted today is not the development roadmap that community manager Sammie Kang teased last week. The developer acknowledges that fans were waiting for a more substantial look at its plans for the game but cites undisclosed “reasons” for why this can’t happen yet. The roadmap should finally be revealed in March, though, alongside the new map.

On the one hand, players will be happy to hear that the developer is taking the game’s cheating problem so seriously, but it’s disappointing to hear that some features have been put on the backburner as a result. Still, PUBG Corp. states “enjoyment of PUBG remains [its] number one priority,” which comes in many different forms.

PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds is available now on PC and on Xbox One through the Game Preview program.
