Samsung KILLS Galaxy S8 Android Oreo Update

Samsung’s killed the Galaxy S8 Android Oreo update – but why?

Android Oreo started rolling out to Samsung Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ handsets this week. But then, all of a sudden, it stopped. No one knew why, but now Samsung has responded officially.

Here’s what it said: “Following a limited number of cases where Galaxy S8 and S8+ devices have rebooted unexpectedly with the Android 8.0 Oreo, we have temporarily stopped the rollout of the update. We are investigating the issue internally to ensure that the impact to the affected devices is minimized and the rollout of the update can resume as quickly as possible.”

Random reboots are not something to be taken lightly, so it’s good that Samsung took note of this and nixed the current build. After the Galaxy Note 7 debacle, the company cannot afford any more PR disasters. Or handing out new phones for free, after ones broke.

How long will it take to fix this? Unknown. Will there be another update released? I’d say so. But with Samsung, you never know. Android P is still a ways off, so there’s no chance of them skipping Android Oreo and moving straight to Android P.

This means Samsung will likely be working round the clock to fix this issue and get a working update out between now and the launch of Android P.

The next logical question is will the Galaxy S8 get Android P? That could go either way to be honest. Once Android P lands, the Galaxy S8 will be quite far into its release cycle, and Samsung doesn’t have a great track record with getting updates out, so there is a distinct possibility that Oreo could be the last proper update the Galaxy S8 gets.

I’m not saying this WILL happen, just that it is a distinct possibility. Having said that, the Galaxy S7 is getting Oreo, so perhaps Android P will be the Galaxy S8’s last major update before it’s swallowed by Android fragmentation?
