Samsung’s brand new Exynos 9810 CPU is now official and will soon find itself up and running inside the Galaxy S9

Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 845 CPU will power A LOT of Galaxy S9 handsets in 2018. Other versions of the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy Note 9, however, will run Samsung’s own Exynos 9810 chipset, though no one is 100% sure of how the split will work just yet.

Samsung has developed the Exynos 9810 in order to better compete with Apple’s iPhone X. The new Exynos 9810 leverages a bunch of new technologies that bring a 40% multi-core performance boost over the chip that was used in the Galaxy S8.

The Exynos 9810 is massively efficient too, being built using Samsung’s 10nm FinFET process, and it will also pack in support for ultra-fast LTE, though the main event will neural network-based learning and stronger security for the handsets it powers.

Here’s the official line via Samsung: “This cutting-edge technology allows the processor to accurately recognize people or items in photos for fast image searching or categorization, or through depth sensing, scan a user’s face in 3D for hybrid face detection.

It added: “By utilizing both hardware and software, hybrid face detection enables realistic face-tracking filters as well as stronger security when unlocking a device with one’s face. For added security, the processor has a separate security processing unit to safeguard vital personal data such as facial, iris and fingerprint information.”

This technology will enable better face-scanning abilities, bringing the S9 and Galaxy Note 9 more inline with Apple’s market-leading FaceID.

The Exynos 9810 also packs in a dedicated image processor and upgraded multi-format codec (MFC) that will ensure images and video always look on point. Case in point: the MFC will render some 1,024 different tones for each primary color, or 1.07 billion possibilities of colors, a significant upgrade compared to the previous 8-bit color format’s 16.7 million colors.

The BIG question here, however, is how Samsung will ensure parity across its devices when using two distinct CPUs? I mean, a bunch of S9 units will run the Snapdragon 845, whereas another chunk will run on Samsung’s Exynos 9810 platform, and that could get, umm… rather confusing.

Guess we’ll find out more in a few weeks time!
