It goes with saying that the Nintendo Switch has been a big success ever since it was launched in March, quickly becoming Nintendo’s fastest selling console ever. The demand for the Big N’s new console has proved to be a bright spot for retailers as well, with GameStop now declaring the Switch as the company’s “most successful Nintendo launch ever”.
During GameStop’s quarterly financial conference call, CEO Paul Raines stated that the Nintendo Switch has been a “massive success” for the company since its launch, managing to generate a 14.8% year-on-year growth in hardware sales for the retailer. With attach rates at a “consistently high” 5-to-1 since launch, this momentum is expected to continue on for the second half of the year as GameStop expects a “healthy’ allocation of Switch consoles to be available to consumers.
GameStop CFO Robert Lloyd stated during the conference call that consumer demand for the Switch continues to be strong, with the company’s third quarter of the fiscal year expected to be driven by demand for Nintendo’s new console. To that effect, the company has already taken steps to handle this expected demand by announcing that GameStop stores will be open on Thanksgiving for the inevitable Switch sales rush.
It’s not just the Nintendo Switch that’s been making waves for GameStop in recent weeks, though. Ever since pre-orders opened for the SNES Classic Edition, the console has generated “very high demand” for the company according to Raines. With retailers across the globe selling out the retro console almost instantaneously, GameStop has stepped forward to reassure gamers that more SNES Classic Edition systems will be available on launch day, though these will be sold on a first come, first served basis.
The Switch may be lighting up sales charts in 2017 so far, but there are signs suggesting that this momentum will be continuing on for a little while longer at least. With a slate of new releases scheduled to arrive on the Big N’s new console in the coming months, such as Super Mario Odyssey, Telltale’s Batman and Guardians of the Galaxy, as well as a potential Final Fantasy 15 Switch release, there’s no reason to believe that Nintendo (and GameStop) won’t continue this run of success for the rest of 2017 and into 2018.
The Nintendo Switch is available now.
