According to a new report, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) will be the sole supplier of processors for the upcoming iPhone 7. The report, from Korean publication Electronic Times, says that TSMC won the bid over Samsung to produce the chips with its 10-nanometre process.
This would be a shift from the current manufacturing split in which Samsung and TSMC both produce a portion of the A9 processors that appear in the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus. However, if true, it wouldn’t be an entirely unfamiliar approach: TSMC was the sole supplier of the A8 chips in 2014’s iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, which was itself a move away from Samsung’s position as the only supplier in prior generations.
