How do 2018’s pro iPad models compare?

Apple’s latest iPads are out and they are freaking amazing. I’m of course talking about the all-new, all-screen iPad Pro line. The devices have finally jettisoned the Home buttons with Touch ID in favor for an all-venture interface and Face ID authentication.

As with the previous iPad Pro lineup, Apple is offering two models this time around. There’s the 12.9in iPad Pro (the same size as last time) and then the all-new 11in iPad Pro (which is up from the old 10.5in iPad Pro). And while these iPad Pros are VERY similar to each other, there are a few differences. So let’s take a look to see how they compare.

12.9in iPad Pro vs 11in iPad Pro: Specs and Design

When it comes to internal specs, the two iPad Pro’s are identical. That’s because each has the 64-bit A12X and M12 motion coprocessor. The A12X is about 10-20% faster than the A11X found in the previous iPad Pros. Both iPad Pros offer the same storage and RAM combinations. That’s 64/256/512 GB with 4GB of RAM or their 1TB models with 6GB of RAM.

When it comes to connectivity and audio, both iPad Pros features exactly the same specs too. Each comes with the exact same connectivity when it comes to Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, the same Smart Connector, Apple Pencil 2 support, USB-C port, and the same four speakers. Each also offers a cellular model.

Color options and camera specs are also exactly the same with each iPad Pro being available in silver or space grey and each featuring a front 7MP 1080p HD camera and a rear 12MP, 4k HD camera with Quad-LED True Tone flash.

They both also feature the same battery life at up to 10 hours of surfing the web on Wi‑Fi, watching video, or listening to music, and up to 9 hours of surfing the web using cellular data network.

12.9in iPad Pro vs 11in iPad Pro: Display

So what IS different? Basically just the size of the display (the iPad Pro’s are even the same thickness–5.9mm). But even when we are talking the display differences, know that both displays are essentially identical in their technology. The only difference is resolution and size.

The 12.9in iPad Pro has the bigger display with the higher resolution (2732×2048 versus the 11in’s 2388×1668) but that resolution is only due to the physically larger screen size. Both iPads have the exact same 264 pixels per inch.

And that’s it. Everything else is EXACTLY the same about the displays. The both are Liquid Retina displays with TrueTone and ProMotion technology. They both feature a fingerprint-resistant oleophobic coating, a fully laminated display, and a wide color display (P3).

12.9in iPad Pro vs 11in iPad Pro: Price and Verdict

Here’s the rundown of the various costs for the different models of each iPad Pro:

  • 11in iPad Pro: 64 GB £769, 256 GB £919, 512 GB £1,119, 1 TB £1,519 (add £150 on for the cellular model).
  • 12.9in iPad Pro: 64 GB £969, 256 GB £1,119, 512 GB £1,319, 1 TB £1,719 (add £150 on for the cellular model).

As you can see, the 12.9in iPad Pro is £200 more expensive than the 11in iPad Pro. That extra cost is for the bigger screen–and that’s it.

So, which should you get? It depends what you want the iPad Pro for. Graphics professionals who are looking for a digital canvas to do their work on—or those looking for a laptop replacement—will probably want to opt for the larger 12.9in iPad Pro. But for those wanting a more portable device with a smaller form factor, the cheaper 11in iPad Pro is the way to go.
