A couple of weeks ago, Capcom revealed a ton of new information about its hotly anticipated hack-and-slash game Devil May Cry 5 during a panel at New York Comic Con, including a stylish new weapon for Dante. Style is an important and iconic aspect of the series as a whole and Capcom seems to know this because it’s releasing a special edition of the title that comes with a fancy coat – in Japan, at least.
The official Capcom Japan website has put up a Devil May Cry 5 Ultra Limited Edition for sale; specifically three versions of it, with each one coming with a replica coat belonging to one of the three playable characters.
Newcomer V’s coat is the cheapest one of the bunch, selling at 600,000 yen (roughly under $5500).
Fan-favorite Nero’s coat, complete with ripped sleeve, costs 750,000 yen (roughly over $6500).
And finally, Dante’s iconic outfit is, unsurprisingly, the most expensive at 900,000 yen (just under $8000).
The chance to own one of these coats will no doubt be tempting for some fans but there’s no word on whether these editions will be made available anywhere else aside from Japan. If not, those desperate to be able to accurately cosplay as their favorite protagonist will need to import, which will only make the collectibles even more expensive.
Overly expensive special editions have been subjected to criticism in recent years, with many seeing them as an example of publishers just being greedy. Capcom is already being accused as such due to them including microtransactions in DMC5, which has left many players worried that it might turn the game into a “pay-to-win” experience.
This also follows on from the controversy concerning Dante’s new theme song, which was met with incredibly negative feedback online. The track was quickly removed from YouTube, leading many to assume it was due to its unpopularity. However, it was later revealed that the real reason was because the vocalist behind the song was accused of sexually harassing a minor. It’s still unknown if Capcom will remove or replace the track from the final game or not.
Devil May Cry 5 will release on PC, PS4, and Xbox One on March 8, 2019.
