With this new mod, you can install the Pixel 2’s awesome Portrait Mode camera app on your Nexus 6P and Nexus 5X

The Nexus 6P and Nexus 5X might be gone, but the handsets are still alive and kicking in the hands of many developers and modders within the Android community.

Serial modder, Charles Chow, has now modded the Google Camera APK, complete with Portrait Mode, for the original Pixel and Pixel XL as well as the Nexus 6P and Nexus 5X.

Chow also recently brought Google’s AR Stickers and AR Core to the Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P. Chow is well known in the Android community and with the above in mind, it’s easy to see why.

All of the best phones around right now feature some form of Portrait Mode and, given the Nexus 5X and 6P’s camera tech, it makes sense for them to as well.

“His explanation of the mod is probably more complicated than he lets on, but to the end user, portrait mode simply replaces the lens blur mode,” reports Android Police.

“Taking a photo in this mode will produce two images: one HDR+ photo with zero shutter lag, and one with the portrait effect applied.”

In order to get this feature up and running on your Pixel, Pixel XL, Nexus 6P, or Nexus 5X, all you need to do is install the Camera NX v7.3 via APK Mirror.

This version uses the latest Google Camera build as well (5.1.016).

It’s not without its bugs, however, and most of these will be apparent inside AR Stickers. Still, it’s a cool addition to some phones that otherwise would not have had the feature in the first place.
