Just like the book series and films, a large part of Portkey’s star-studded mobile RPG Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery is about making friends and maintaining those relationships. Throughout the course of the game, players will make friends with new characters, and these friends can be leveled up for various rewards, like free gems.
At the time of this writing, Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery has a total of seven friends players can meet during the game. These seven friends come from different houses and all possess unique personality traits and talents. Interacting with these friends as much as possible and leveling them will in turn allow players to utilize them during certain quests in the story. This combined with the gem rewards attached to the friend leveling process make it a worthwhile endeavor.
Below are the seven friends players can meet in Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery.
- Rowan Khanna (Gryffindor) – Met in Year 1
- Ben Copper (Gryffindor) – Met in Year 1
- Penny Haywood (Hufflepuff) – Met in Year 1
- Bill Weasly (Gryffindor) – Met in Year 2
- Nymphadora Tonks (Hufflepuff) – Met in Year 3
- Tulip Karasu (Ravenclaw) – Met in Year 3
- Barnaby Lee (Slytherin) – Unavailable
For the most part, it seems as though leveling friends is done through scripted interactions that take place at certain points in the story. Sometimes these interactions are available as side quests, and players can choose to pursue them or ignore them. The upside to doing these side quests are the rewards that come with completing them (extra gems, XP for friends), but the downside is that spending the energy on side activities will make getting through the main story much more difficult. To make things go a bit faster, be sure to make regular trips around the castle every six hours to collect the free energy.
When these side quests will let players level up their friends, they will notice a handshaking icon above their heads, either in the Great Hall or the Courtyard. At that point, players will have to engage in a series of questions, and will be judged based on if they pick the right answers. It’s not hard to suss out what the correct response is based on the personality of the person players are interacting with, and those with high attribute points will have access to additional dialogue choices that will get them even further ahead.
One thing to keep in mind is that some friend interactions will actually cost coins for players to start them. Usually it’s not a whole lot, and players should earn enough coins by going to classes, attempting to get house points, and just generally progressing through the game. However, someone who doesn’t want to buy microtransactions and wants to do all these friend interactions may want to think twice about spending their coins on cosmetics.
Overall, leveling friends in Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery through these interactions is smart for anyone who wants to maximize their character’s potential in the game. Leveling these characters will also net players some free gems, more dueling opportunities, and other rewards, so there’s that to keep in mind as well.
