iPhone X vs OnePlus 5 – How Do They Compare?

iPhone X vs OnePlus 5 – Vastly different phones and prices! We compare the iPhone X to the OnePlus 5

Apple and OnePlus have both now unveiled their flagships for 2017. The OnePlus 5 is the company’s latest device featuring an impressive array of specs including good storage options and an insane amount of RAM. The OnePlus 5 also has a great rear camera. But Apple’s iPhone X isn’t exactly lacking either. The device features a brand new edge-to-edge display with the company’s new Face ID biometric security features. While both phones are their respective company’s top of the line models, there are many, many differences between them. Let’s take a look to see how they compare.

iPhone X vs OnePlus 5: Specs

Here are the specs for the iPhone X:

  • Display: 5.8in OLED display with a 2436×1125 resolution at 458 ppi
  • Dimensions: 143.6mm x 70.9mm x 7.7mm
  • Weight: 174 grams
  • Storage: 64 or 256GB
  • Memory: 3 GB RAM
  • Processors: A11 Bionic chip
  • Front camera: 7 MP photos and 1080p video
  • Rear camera: Dual 12MP wide-angle and telephoto cameras, Dual optical image stabilisation, Optical zoom, 4K video
  • Battery: 2716 mAh, Wireless charging

And here are the specs for the OnePlus 5:

  • Display: 5.5in display with a 1920×1080 resolution at 401ppi
  • Dimensions: 152.7mm x 74.7 mm x 7.25mm
  • Weight: 153 grams
  • Storage: 64 or 128GB
  • Memory: 6 GB of 8GB RAM
  • Processors: Qualcomm Snapdragon 835
  • Front camera: 16 MP
  • Rear camera: Dual camera 16 MP wide-angle lens and 20 MP telephoto lens, 4K video
  • Battery: 3300 mAh

Both phones come in 64GB storage options, but their upper tier storage capabilities are different. The OnePlus 5 maxes out at 128GB, while the iPhone X maxes out at 256GB. That 256GB option is great, but for most people 128GB is probably the sweet spot–and the iPhone X doesn’t offer that. Then again, 256GB is becoming the storage option of choice for power users as the file size of the photos of the dual lens cameras and the 4K videos continue to grow. A 256GB iPhone X can be considered future proof for many years, while the max 12GB size of the OnePlus 5 could get filled quickly if you are a power user.

Moving on to RAM, the OnePlus 5 come with almost double to three times what the iPhone X offers. The 64GB model of the OnePlus 5 comes with a whopping 6GB of RAM and the 128GB model comes with a crazy 8GBs! That compares to the 3GB in the iPhone X. But truthfully, most of the time your phone isn’t going to be using all of its RAM–so speed benefits are debatable. What your phone will be using all of the time is its CPU–and there the iPhone X is king. It’s A11 Bionic chip with neural engine leaves the OnePlus 5’s Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 in the dust. Some early test peg the A11 as almost twice as fast.

iPhone X vs OnePlus 5: Display & Design

Here the iPhone X owns its. That’s because it features an all-new edge-to-edge display. That 5.8in display is an OLED that comes in at 2436 x 1125 resolution at 458 ppi. The OnePlus 5 still features a standard display (ie: not edge-to-edge). It’s 5.5in display is 1920×1080 resolution at 401ppi. In other words, the iPhone X’s display looks much much better and sharper. The iPhone X’s display also features a true tone panel, which means it adjusts to match the warmth of the color temperature in the room, making it easier on the eyes.

Because of the iPhone X’s edge-to-edge display, its design is also more refined, eliminating the “forehead” and “chin” bumpers at the top and bottom of the phone. The OnePlus 5 still has those bumpers. Overall, then, the iPhone X kills the OnePlus 5 in this department.

iPhone X vs OnePlus 5: Battery

The OnePlus 5 has the bigger battery at 3300 mAh, but each phone should last around the same amount of time in average daily use. Where the iPhone X clearly wins it is it offers wireless charging. That’s right: buh-bye cables! It’s too bad the OnePlus 5 doesn’t offer this. As the tech gains more adoption, wireless charging pads can be founding more places–like Starbucks coffee shops.

iPhone X vs OnePlus 5: Camera

The OnePlus 5 strikes back when you get to the camera department. Its front camera is an astounding 16MP. That’s over double the megapixels found in the iPhone X’s front camera. And it’s a godsend for selfie lovers in this social media-obsessed age. When you get to the rear cameras, both the iPhone X and OnePlus 5 feature dual lens systems. The iPhone X features a telephoto and wide-angle lens that is 12MP each. However, the OnePlus 5’s dual lens system offers a 16MP wide-angle lens and CRAZY 20 MP telephoto lens. OnePlus really wanted to pack the best cameras into their device that they could, and users will see the difference.

iPhone X vs OnePlus 5: Cost & Verdict

The iPhone X will cost £999 (64GB) and £1149 (256GB). The OnePlus 5 will cost £449 (64GB) or £499 (128GB). As you can now see, these phones are very different devices–and their prices reflect that. The OnePlus 5 is a great choice if you are looking for an excellent rear camera in a decent smartphone package. But if you want the absolute latest and best in design, display, and CPU, the OnePlus 5 can’t compete with the iPhone X.

HOWEVER – the OnePlus 5 offers pretty much unprecedented value for money. It has a great camera, an impressive CPU, mountains of RAM, and it looks beautiful.

Given the price difference, it’s hard not to look at the OnePlus 5. From an Android user perspective, the OnePlus 5 is still a great option – even when you factor in the Galaxy S8, Google Pixel 2 XL, and LG V30.

I don’t think OnePlus will convince any users hellbent on buying an iPhone X, but compared to Apple’s other offerings – the iPhone 8, most notably – the OnePlus 5 is a vastly superior option.
