Nintendo Announces DIY Accessory Playsets for Switch

Earlier today, the Big N primed everyone for an announcement that would reveal a “new interactive experience” for Switch consoles geared toward “kids and those who are kids at heart,” which left practically every gaming fan guessing as to what could be on the way. Now, the company has officially unveiled a brand new line of DIY accessory playsets for its latest console that has been dubbed “Nintendo Labo”.

Fans can get their first look at Nintendo Labo in the video below, with the new product looking to be some sort of a mini-game collection that involves creating real-life cardboard accessories included in playsets. Details are still relatively scarce at this point in time, but based on what’s shown in Nintendo Labo’s debut trailer, Switch owners will be able to use different building kits to take part in activities such as fishing, playing piano, racing a bike, and becoming a giant, punching robot.

For those wondering exactly how Nintendo Labo works, fans can take part in all of the aforementioned activities by detaching the Joy-Cons from the Switch itself and using pre-cut cardboard packs to construct certain accessories that form into a fishing pole, piano, camera, and more. As it so happens, Nintendo are actually calling these “Toy-Cons.”

The Big N will be putting out two separate Nintendo Labo bundles on April 20 in the US and April 27 in Europe, with the Variety Kit priced at $70 and the Robot Kit costing $80. A separate Customization Set for $10 includes stencils, stickers, and colored tape for additional Toy-Con designs.

All things considered, it’s safe to say that almost no one was anticipating Nintendo Labo to be the focus of today’s special announcement, especially with many believing that the company would be showing off a product that pertained to one of its many unused patents. Nevertheless, Nintendo Labo lives, and it shows yet again that the Big N is not afraid to think outside the box.

Nintendo Labo’s Variety Kit and Robot Kit will release on April 20, 2018 in the US, and April 27, 2018 in Europe for the Switch.
