Because the Overwatch League is increasingly popular, Blizzard is very strict about enforcing its rules, which is why Overwatch player Felix “xQc” Lengyel has “mutually agreed to part ways” with Dallas Fuel. Now, the nature of these rules is to ensure fun competition between teams, which is understandable, but some may be anxious about their enforcement over trivial and honest accidents. At the very least, that seems to be the motivation for the bizarre apology issued by the LA Gladiators Head Coach David “dpei” Pei.
Last night, the LA Gladiators played against the Houston Outlaws, and during halftime, Coach Pei accidentally bumped into some of Outlaws’ professional Overwatch players backstage. Although the accident seems minor and insignificant, the coach felt the need to issue a formal apology to the players and fans of the Overwatch League.
Here’s Coach Pei’s official and rather humbling apology:
“Yesterday during the Outlaws match, I inadvertently bumped into two of the Outlaws players. I hadn’t been watching where I was going. I was distracted thinking about what to say to our team for Kings Row, but I wanted to apologize immediately. I apologized to their players immediately after the game and Tairong [head coach of the Outlaws] shortly after. I am sincerely sorry for my actions and assure you that there was no malicious intent. Even though it was an accident, it was still unprofessional of me to should bump players from another team so again, I am sorry.”
While the apology seems strange and a little unnecessary for what sounds like such a minor incident, at the very least it shows the Gladiators’ dedication to sportsmanship and professionalism. Compared to the recent league players who faced disciplinary action, this is a breath of fresh air for the Overwatch League.
Even though the Overwatch League often makes headlines for the misconduct of its players, the league and the game itself can still be very relaxing. According to Elon Musk, Overwatch is a “soothing” game. And while typically faced with reports of misconduct, the showmanship presented here by Coach Pei is rather soothing itself.
Overwatch is available now for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
