Pokemon GO Brings Back Legendary Birds in Select Areas

It’s been a few weeks since Legendary Birds appeared in Pokemon GO, as the beloved creatures faded into the ether at the end of August following the limited-time-only Raid Battles. The sky-faring creatures haven’t popped up in the mobile game since, which has felt to many like a lifetime of waiting, but now it looks as though the Legendary Birds have returned. The only stipulation is, players have to be in Denmark to catch them.

Earlier this year, Niantic announced a handful of Safari Zone live events for Pokemon GO that allow fans the opportunity to capture specific rare Pokemon, including regional-exclusive monsters that don’t normally appear in certain European countries. One of these gatherings took place today (October 7th, 2017) at the Fisketorvet mall in Copenhagen, Denmark, where players can scoop up Pokemon like Chansey, Larvitar, Kangaskhan, shiny versions of Pikachu and Magikarp, and many more.

What players attending the Copenhagen gathering didn’t expect to see were the Legendary Birds, the ultra-powerful, highly vied-for Pokemon that took over the game this summer. June, July, and August saw players battling Articuno, Zapdos, Moltres, and Lugia through various exclusive raids, but the game pulled the birds out in September to introduce the Legendary Beasts Entei, Raikou, and Suicune. There have reportedly been confirmed sightings of both Articuno and Moltres at the Safari Zone gathering, and it’s assumed that the other Legendary Bird Zapdos will make an appearance before too long.

What’s perhaps more interesting than the base fact that the Legendaries have resurfaced during this gathering, especially without any teases or announcements on Niantic’s part, is that Pokemon GO didn’t feature any raids at past Safari Zone events. Niantic indicated that it hoped to keep network traffic as clear as possible during the festivals, a move motivated by the catastrophic failure that was Pokemon GO Fest. The game infamously had massive network issues at the Chicago-based event, which prevented the majority of the roughly 10,000 attendees from participating at the event, so it’s quite odd that such sought-after Pokemon popped up this time around without any forewarning.

It still remains unclear whether the Legendary Birds’ return to Pokemon GO at the Copenhagen Safari Zone event means that they will swoop around for another appearance in other parts of the world in the future. On the flip side, this could simply be a one-time occurrence, or even a widespread glitch in the system. In any case, one thing is crystal clear: Pokemon GO just got even more unpredictable than ever before.
