Just yesterday, Rockstar Games revealed a brand new Red Dead Redemption 2 trailer. As fans steadily pick the new footage apart to learn more about its characters (including new protagonist Arthur Morgan), eagle-eyed viewers have discovered that it includes an homage to a high-profile cowboy movie.
In the comparison gif below, fans can see that the new Red Dead Redemption 2 trailer borrows a shot from The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford. That 2007 film stars Brad Pitt as Jesse James and includes a scene where James and his gang prepare to rob a train. It’s an anxious moment as the gang stands in the trees, light flickering on their rag-covered faces before James stands on top of a blockade and the train screeches to a halt.
The train robbery scene is beautifully shot and is just one example of why the movie scored two Oscar nominations (including one for cinematography). Rockstar has already revealed several stunning Red Dead Redemption 2 screenshots, that look incredibly atmospheric and make good, dramatic use of smoke just like the film does.
But the reference to The Assassination of Jesse James… suggests that fans can expect movie-worthy shots and spectacles throughout the entire game. Whether Red Dead Redemption 2 players are robbing trains or just riding across the plains on horseback, the game will keep that cinema quality.
Rockstar Games’ take will surely be more interactive, though. Pressing a character’s ear to train tracks and watching gravel vibrate on the ground isn’t really the type of gameplay that fans are going giddy for. Hopefully Red Dead Redemption 2‘s train robberies will be as exciting as Grand Theft Auto 5‘s heists.
It will also be interesting to see if Red Dead Redemption 2 borrows any story cues from the Brad Pitt flick. Robert Ford is a huge fan of Jesse James and sees the character try to join James’ gang before, as the title of the film suggests, his feelings for his idol sour. Meanwhile, the Rockstar Games’ title appears to be a prequel and it will follow the infighting within the Van der Linde gang.
For example, in one scene, a character who appears to be Abigail Martson can be seen yelling at Morgan. So if the upcoming game can present the tensions of its fictional cowboys and outlaws at the level of The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, then fans will be in for a brilliant time.
Red Dead Redemption 2 will be released in spring 2018 for PS4 and Xbox One.
