Super Smash Bros 4 Finals at EVO 2018 was a Complete Disaster – Game Rant

Evo is one of the most popular and well-known fighting game tournaments in the world, where players face off in various games like Street Fighter and Super Smash Bros. 4. Usually this event brings competitors from around the world together to face off and test their skills to see who will come out on top. However, this year’s Evo tourney for Super Smash Bros. 4 was an absolute disaster to some fans, especially when it came down to the grand finals between Bharat “Lima” Chintapall and Zach “CaptainZack” Lauth.

The Smash 4 Evo tourney started off as any other tourney does, with a varied range of character picks based on who the competitors prefer to play. However, fans quickly started getting upset with the large number of players picking Bayonetta for the tourney. Bayonetta is a hot-button issue in the competitive Smash 4 community as she is overpowered compared to many of the other characters on the roster.

While some fans want the character banned, others think that banning a single character is unfair. Fans are hoping that because some abilities are changing in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate that Bayonetta will be nerfed. Regardless, Bayonetta was the primary pick for several players, Lima and CaptainZack included.

Throughout the tourney, the crowd at Evo booed and heckled the Bayonetta players for choosing the overpowered character, which will be returning in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Following CaptainZack’s victory that led him into the Top 8, CaptainZack shot a middle finger to the booing crowd, and also tweeted out “Stop booing me like I care” on his personal Twitter account.

Online, spectators quickly rallied behind either the crowd or the Bayonetta players. Some Smash competitors said booing was a “bad showing” from the community, while others criticized CaptainZack’s lack of professionalism and maturity. Regardless of which side, the event was quickly turning sour and a large portion of the crowd in attendance left before the grand finals match.

In the final match between Lima and CaptainZack, the two, both playing Bayonetta, stalled the match by holding their shots, eliciting shouts and boos from the crowd and forcing a referee to step in and threaten them with a disqualification. The match ended with Lima’s victory, and an emptier crowd. While CaptainZack and Lima both apologized via Twitter, many fans were upset with how the two handled the Grand Finals match. With Super Smash Bros. Ultimate on the horizon, and a new Nintendo Direct later this week, many fans believe this will be the last time Smash 4 makes an appearance at Evo, giving the game a rather sad and unprofessional send-off.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate launches December 7 exclusively for Nintendo Switch.
