Telltale Games Replacing Old Engine for Stranger Things Game – Game Rant

Back in 2004, the developer Telltale Games created an in-house game engine called the Telltale Tool by using the Lua programming language, and it supported each and every release from the company for nearly a decade, with titles such as Sam & Max to The Walking Dead having been built with the software. Now, the company has announced its decision to phase out the engine in preparation of its forthcoming Stranger Things project.

This much was confirmed in a recent report from Variety who detailed Telltale Games’ internal changes ever since the company’s CEO left last year. According to the report, there will be changes to the studio’s production schedule, and it will adopt Unity for its latest efforts, with Stranger Things and The Wolf Among Us: Season 2 – the latter of which received a delay into 2019.

The last appearance of the Telltale Tool in operation will be found in the final season of Telltale Games’ take on The Walking Dead, with the company then set to switch over to working on projects in Unity for future releases. With this being the case, the change is going to come relatively quickly, as the debut of TWD‘s finale is set to occur just a couple of short months from now in the middle of August 2018.

All things considered, it’s great to see Telltale Games evolving in terms of development and retiring the older Telltale Tool after roughly a decade of creating titles such as The Walking Dead and skyrocketing the studio to success. By utilizing the third-party engine of Unity, the developer will be given a lot more freedom to focus its creative abilities on aspects like game mechanics and narratives that revolve around unique choices. So, it will be interesting to see what Telltale Games brings to Stranger Things and The Wolf Among Us: Season 2 down the line.
