Following the successes of PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds and Fortnite, other developers have attempted to jump in on the Battle Royale trend as well. While most have struggled to reach that same level of popularity, Respawn Entertainment seems to be beating the odds after stealth releasing its own take on Battle Royale genre with Apex Legends last month.
The rising popularity of Apex Legends has clearly captured the attention of Epic Games, as the developer has been adding certain mechanics like a ping system to its own game. Now, Fortnite players have discovered that a respawn mechanic is on the way soon.
The heavily rumored “Second Chance” respawn system appears to be right around the corner, as vans have started showing up all over the island in Fortnite. Eager players have begun to find and get a glimpse as to what they look like by entering replay mode.
Over on Reddit, users Remizji and 7damage_ have managed to find and list all 19 van locations on a map. It should give a good indication of where players need to go to bring a squad mate back once the vans are officially turned on in Fortnite.
While Epic Games hasn’t commented specifically on the existence or the functionality of these vans, many players assume it will work similarly to how Apex Legends handles respawning. Within Respawn Entertainment’s battle royale game, when a teammate gets taken out by an enemy player, the other members in the 3 person squad have a limited time to recover their banner and bring it to a respawn device to revive the player back into the match. With this being the case, the respawn mechanic’s functionality will likely be limited to Duos or Squads.
Tyler “Ninja” Blevins recently provided his own commentary on the recent changes that Epic Games has added to Fortnite. The popular streamer poked fun at Epic Games decision to start emulating its competition.
Specifically, Blevins commented on the newly added ping system which Apex Legends first brought to prominence as a way for people without microphones to contribute to the squad. He also referenced Season 8’s pirate theme as inspiration brought about by Microsoft’s Sea of Thieves, a game which has recently gained back a bit of popularity after a year of content updates and quality of life enhancements. Regardless of the reasoning, these updates ultimately show that Epic Games is interested in making the end product more appealing to Fortnite players.
Fortnite is available now for Android, iOS, PC, PlayStation 4, Switch, and Xbox One.
